SENIOR Scientist

Cultured Decadence is creating novel methods to make crustacean products using cell culture and tissue engineering techniques. In support of this work, we are seeking a senior scientist who is highly motivated, embraces novel ideas, and will employ innovative thinking to advance the research and development of cell-cultured meat.

You will be a pioneer in an emerging industry and contribute to creating solutions to address the growing demand for sustainable seafood products, reduce the environmental impact of current production methods, and increase access to seafood for consumers around the world.

A competitive candidate will take initiative, thrive in dynamic environments, and have a background in cell or molecular biology, cell physiology, and signaling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Isolation and maintenance of new cultures isolated from animal sources

  • Lead projects for developing cell culture media for novel crustacean cell lines

  • Grow, maintain, and screen candidates for cell banking, assay development and cell characterization

  • Genome engineering; create and screen stable cell lines

  • Analyze biological samples for large datasets such as raw microarray data, genomic sequence data, and proteomics data for gene expression profiling, genome annotation, and structural bioinformatics

  • Manipulate publicly accessible, commercial, or proprietary genomic, proteomic, or post-genomic databases

  • Develop, implement, and interpret relevant cell-based functional assays to support optimization and characterization of novel crustacean cell lines

  • Analyze, synthesize, and present data to the research team and make recommendations for future research

  • Write, review, and support continuous improvement of Standard Operating Procedures and helping to develop a Quality Management System

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team of scientist, oversee RAs, and work directly with CSO and CEO to develop, manage, and complete scientific milestones

Required Skills and Background

  • Ph.D. in bioengineering, bioinformatics, cell biology, genetics or a related field

  • Proven ability to design novel cell biology assays

  • Excellent understanding of cell metabolism, signaling,  and physiology

  • Hands-on experience engineering cell lines

  • Mission-driven, self-directed with a strong technical background and work ethic

  • Demonstrable ability to adhere to ambitious timelines

  • Flexibility and willingness to expand skills and responsibilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication,  organization and time-management skills

Preferred Additional Skills

  • Crustacean, marine, or invertebrate cell biology experience

  • Hands-on experience with muscle or fat cell development and stem cell biology

  • iPSC reprogramming experience and implementation of protocols for culturing and maintaining iPSC line

  • Commercial-scale cell culture process experience

  • Hands-on experience performing cell culture assays in bench-scale bioreactors

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary, healthcare, retirement plan, and stock ownership plan

  • Opportunity to join an experienced cell-cultured meat startup team

  • Collaborative work environment
